School Membership
Criteria to join the SunSmart Schools Program:
- Most or all students wear sun protective hats all year, or when the UV Index is 3 and above
- Sunscreen is available throughout the school and its use is supported
- Outdoor events are rescheduled to avoid peak UV times
- UV protection is encouraged through teacher and parent role modelling and classroom activities
- The school has sufficient shade or is working towards increasing shade within the outdoor playgrounds
- The school uniform/dress code includes UV protective items (e.g. shirts with collars, longer sleeves)
- The school has a UV protection policy that meets Cancer Council WA criteria
Follow these easy steps to renew or apply for new SunSmart membership:
- Check the SunSmart membership status of your school
- Review the UV Sun Protection Best Practice Guidelines for WA Schools
- Develop a UV Sun Protection Policy or update the existing one. A SunSmart Schools sample policy is available to download and adapt
- Register below to become a SunSmart School and upload your policy
- SunSmart will review your application and policy
Once approved, you will receive an exclusive link to order free hardcopy resources. Please note, new members receive a free SunSmart sign.
Cancer Council WA requires SunSmart Schools to review their UV Sun Protection Policy every three years to maintain their SunSmart membership.
